Top Most Reliable Car Brands of the Year

There are some automakers that have a reputation for being reliable. Other makers have a more troubled history in this regard.

Toyota is a reliable brand, which is why the RAV4 crossover, Camry, Tacoma pickup truck, and Sienna minivan are so popular.

Nissan vehicles are also reliable and rank well above average in this regard. This includes the Infiniti luxury division.

1. Toyota

While the brand may be known for being synonymous with reliability (think Nature Valley granola bars), it’s also great at providing reliable rides. In fact, it tops J.D. Power’s 2023 dependability study with owners reporting fewer problems than the industry average.

Toyota’s reputation for long-term reliability is backed up by its trucks, SUVs, minivans and sedans. Popular models include the Tacoma and RAV4 crossover, Camry, Corolla, Sienna and more. Buick is another US automaker to find itself in the top 10 for dependability thanks to its excellent small car lineup.

2. Acura

Acura is a luxury brand that’s known for fun to drive cars less expensive than other luxury vehicles. Its cars and SUVs have good interior design and quality, too.

Mazda didn’t make a big leap this year and remains at seventh place. But owners give it high marks for exterior design, interior quality and infotainment tech. Its models also rank high for reliability and longevity. Its SUVs are especially dependable. They are a great choice for families.

3. Chevrolet

Consumer Reports puts GMC in the third spot thanks to its long-lasting SUVs and pickup trucks. Its vehicles also offer refinement and value retention, a big reason why it ranks above average for reliability.

Despite being known for sleek Corvettes and Camaros, Chevrolet has a wide range of cars that fit almost any budget or lifestyle. Its reliable cars, such as the Malibu and Equinox, are praised for their spacious cabins and above-average technology features. RepairPal, J.D. Power and Consumer Reports all give Chevy about an average reliability rating.

4. Nissan

Nissan has a number of great vehicles in their fleet, with many being highly ranked in Consumer Reports dependability surveys. Their SUVs like the Rogue and Pathfinder rank well, while their newer EV models, including the all-electric Lyriq, have fantastic range capabilities.

Since its establishment in 1933, Nissan has been dedicated to innovation and forward-thinking engineering. That commitment to quality is evident in every model they produce. They are also affordable to own and maintain over the long haul.

5. Volvo

Volvo’s commitment to producing safe cars is reflected in their brand strategy and motto “Designed Around You.” They are also known for their top safety ratings.

Mitsubishi has low sales but has a solid lineup of vehicles that stand up to long-term use and ages without significant problems. Their SUVs like the CR-V and Odyssey minivan have top reliability ratings in their segments.

Kia has built a new reputation and image for themselves with their quality, value, and upscale appeal to consumers. Their Kia Telluride, Sportage, and Sorento models have excellent warranties.

6. Hyundai

Hyundai and its sister brand Kia didn’t have the best start, but they now offer cars, SUVs and minivans that lead their respective classes for dependability. The Korean automaker even backs its vehicles with a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty, which is one of the longest available.

Other Asian brands have also improved their reputation for reliability, as evidenced by Chevrolet’s worry-free Bolt all-electric car and GMC’s bulletproof RAM trucks. Jeep and Volvo are also making good strides in this regard.

7. Audi

Few cars will last you as long as an Audi, which is why the luxury brand earns a top spot for reliability. Audi vehicles also boast impressive comfort and tech features.

Alfa Romeo fans will be jubilant to see the Italian firm return to the Driver Power brands table in fifth place. This is largely down to its strong scores for exteriors, interiors and ride and handling.

Buick is another mainstream brand to make the top five thanks to a solid reputation for dependability. Its latest models are marvels of modern technology with stunning screens and intuitive controls.

8. Genesis

The new Genesis GV70 is a sprightly performer when you work the engine hard. Its smooth, powerful acceleration from a dead stop is the kind of thing you’d expect to see in much more expensive luxury cars.

Cadillac is up 12 spots to fifth, thanks to strong reliability ratings for the Escalade and XT5 SUVs. Lincoln climbs 10 places to 16th, while Chrysler drops a dozen spots due to well-below-average reliability for the Pacifica Hybrid minivan.

Kia ranks 13th overall, Buick is 11th, and Chevrolet is 12th among mass market brands.
